Description:

Ancient Near East, the Levant / Holy Land, Canaan, ca. 1500 to 1400 BCE. Three finely shaped, bronze flat axe heads, two with a lateral flared design, the third with a wide, crescent-form blade. This collection would be wonderful for fans of Biblical Archaeology. The two lateral blades are in the style of axe heads from Hazor, a city described in the Book of Joshua as the head of the Canaanite city-states, and the site of one of Joshua's most important victories in the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land. Archaeological expeditions to Hazor from 1955 to 1958 revealed Middle and Late Bronze age temples, palaces, and fortifications, as well as a range of artifacts including cuneiform tablets, ivory objects, a basalt statue of a god, and bronze items like these. Size: 5.5" L x 2.45" W (14 cm x 6.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, USA collection (Upper West Side); acquired from the Holy Land in 1990s
