Lot 122
Germany, Muschelkalk Layer - Alverdissen, Triassic Period, ca. 240 to 230 million years ago. This is an EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE large, museum-grade fossil specimen of NINE COMPLETE and ONE PARTIAL sea lilies (crinoids) of the species Encrinus lilliformis, from the Triassic Period of the Alverdissen deposits. The size is the maximum found and the detail is incredible! Each is preserved in solid calcite with stunning, full 3D detail and anatomy. The preparation work that went into this piece to remove all the rock between the arms and stem sections to the level that is seen, was extremely time-consuming but yielded a fascinating display example. For the best collections or exhibits, this is an ideal candidate specimen as well as a perfect piece for a major interior accent on a wall. The preservation and natural positions of the crinoids are the best possible with long, graceful stems sticking fully off the rock surface. The site where these were collected has long since been closed so only old collection specimens like this are available. Typical repair but no fabrication of missing parts. All crinoids are 100% AUTHENTIC. Ready to hang with reinforced back side and hardware installed. Size: 32" W x 21" H (81.3 cm x 53.3 cm)
Crinoids are known as feather stars or sea lilies and are echinoderms. They are alive today in the oceans but were more prevalent in colonies in prehistory. They live in shallow water but have also been found in extreme deep sea environments. Crinoids resemble a flower with tentacles. They are filter feeders and have feather-like appendages that strain food particles from the ocean currents. Some live as floating organisms but most are attached to the ocean floor by the means of a segmented stem. Most fossilized crinoids are found disarticulated in beds of numerous fragments but they also can be found in articulated forms as they once were when alive. The first occurrences of crinoids in the fossil record as found in the Ordovician Period. Crinoids are composed of three basic components - the arms, the calyx and the stem. The calyx is the body and contains the digestive and reproductive parts. The tentacles contain feathery appendages called cirri which moved the captured food particles down towards the calyx and into the mouth.
