Description:

Near East / Middle East, Persia, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A hand-carved marble panel fragment with a smooth verso, rough peripheries, and a flat obverse. The front of the panel features a tall, block-form Arabic inscription in low relief that was meticulously carved. When translated, this panel reads, "Muhammed is the apostle of god, no god except (Him)." Panels like this were perhaps from marble stelae with longer inscriptions dedicated to Muhammad and Allah, or they may be fragments from large marble sarcophagi. A fine example from Persia! Size: 5.2" W x 4.25" H (13.2 cm x 10.8 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Honolulu, Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Particia Whithoff, London, UK, 1990s
