Description:

Walter Thomas "Tom" Grice (American, 1943-2011). 2 Oil on canvas, ca. 2000. Both are signed "T. Grice" on lower right. A mesmerizing pair of paintings by American artist Tom Grice, each depicting a figure on horseback in a glowing, natural background of the American Southwest. Donning a traditional, wide-brimmed hat and red bandana, the cowboy holds his horse by the reigns while herding a group of cattle. His gaze is directed downward at his livestock who meander through the sandy, desert landscape. Alternatively, the Native American looks fixedly outward, confronting the viewer; his head crowned by a raccoon cap as he grasps a rifle with both hands, his horse stands in a snowy field. Violet mountains rise behind him, just past a forest of thick pines and tall aspens. Both scenes seemingly take place at sunrise or sunset, as the landscapes glow with brilliant hues of fuchsia, gold, orange, and lavender - a vibrant color palette inspired by the Taos School. Size of painting (: 23.25" W x 17.25" H (59.1 cm x 43.8 cm); with frame: 26" W x 20" H (66 cm x 50.8 cm)
