Ivan Otterlifter (First Nations Canadian, Cherokee / Tlingit, 1936-1999), ca. 1964 to 1999 CE. A hand carved black argillite pipe featuring a bear and a figure seated upon a fanged animal. The creature's eyes are inlaid with nacre shell and the bear and human touch their feet and hands together as if in a ritual of connection and trust. The underside is engraved with Ivan Otterlifter's distinctive signature mark a stylized "CYOT." Reportedly Otterlifter was of Cherokee descent, who lived in British Columbia, and was adopted into the Tlingit clan. He was a master wood carver, silversmith, as well as stone carver. Size: 8" L x 1.25" W x 2.75" H (20.3 cm x 3.2 cm x 7 cm)
