Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Near East, Anatolia / The Levant & Egypt, ca. 3000 to 1500 BCE. A fertility goddess amulet- the tiny figure carved from a red jasper stone. The arms bend inward and incised lines accentuate the hips, mid-section, and pubic area. Figurines of women with stylized and exaggerated features were first produced in the near east as early as the 9th millennium BCE, and by 6000 BCE these fertility figures were found throughout the near east and made from a variety of materials - stone and terracotta being most favored. In southern Anatolia, many similar sculptures were found in decorated rooms used as shrines. Some such statues were worshipped in the shrines, others perhaps left as votive offerings left by worshippers- this tiny amulet would have been perfect to carry as a charm - sewn into clothing or tethered to a cord. Ancient Egyptians associated red jasper with fertility, the goddess Isis, and menstrual blood. Size: 1.09" L x 0.52" W (2.8 cm x 1.3 cm)
