Description:

Pre-Columbian, Venezuela, Timoto Cuica, ca. 1000 CE. A rare human effigy terracotta vessel depicting a standing male figure with a bold presence with arms sharply bent at the elbows, oversized hands placed on his chest, exaggerated feet serving as the base, delineated nipples, belly button, male genitalia, and buttocks. The figure's face is quite expressive with stylized almost mask-like eyes, a prominent nose, full gently smiling lips, and petite cup-shaped ears jutting from either side of his face - all topped by an incised coiffure that rises to the vessel's gently flared rim and also falls down the back of the vessel to this fellow's waist. Please note that Venezuela does not have many surviving artifacts; hence this piece is a rare find! Size: 3.25" W x 4.5" H (8.3 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex Eugene Lions Collection, Switzerland, before 1970
