Description:

Central Asia, Himalaya region, Nepal/Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A polychrome wooden book cover crafted from a thick panel and adorned with vivid imagery of seated Bodhisattvas. One figure is the blue-skinned Bhaisajyaguru, the Healing Buddha, holding a lapis pot filled with the elixir of life and adorned with myrobalan flowers. The other is Shakyamuni Buddha. Both are surrounded by a radiant coronal halo and a nimbus encircling their heads. The black central square contains golden Indic script, possibly a mantra; the middle line might read "Om Mani Padme Hum." The edges are painted red with scrolling floral motifs in gold. Buddhist texts are traditionally inscribed on palm fronds, and in Tibet, the loose leaves are stacked between wooden covers, which are then tied with a cord when not in use. Size: 28" L x 1.25" W x 10.25" H (71.1 cm x 3.2 cm x 26 cm)
