Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A carved wooden panel that functioned as a book cover for a Buddhist manuscript, likely a text known as the "Prajnaparamita" (Perfection of Wisdom), featured in Mahayana Buddhism. The central register has an openwork carving with incredible relief details, including auspicious symbols scattered throughout. The goddess Prajnaparamita and bodhisattvas are depicted seated upon pedestals and surrounded by mandorlas. The central figure is Prajnaparamita, mother of all Buddhas, she holds a book and a vajra in her upper hands. The two other mandorlas contain bodhisattvas who personify Prajnaparamita's virtues. The bodhisattva on the right is supported by lions, and the one on the left is supported by peacocks. There are 48 additional bodhisattva figures encircled by scrolling vines. The slightly recessed center is framed by elaborate borders, including a beaded design and a larger border comprised of a wavy motif. The recessed areas retain some remains of gold gilt. Size: 27.5" L x 0.8" W x 8.5" H (69.8 cm x 2 cm x 21.6 cm)
