Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A gilt copper statue of the Bodhisattva of the Lion's Roar, also known as Simhanada Avalokiteshvara, seated atop a lion and lotus pedestal. This bodhisttva is often depicted as riding or seated on a lion, symbolizing the use of wisdom to tame the mind, which is compared to subduing a ferocious lion. The underside of the hollow statue is capped with a copper plate that may have sealed written prayers or offerings inside. Avalokiteshvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) and Manjushri (the Bodhisattva of Wisdom) will both appear atop lions and both assume this form of Simhanada, and therefore often confused for each other. The identifying attribute of Avalokiteshvara is the seated Buddha ontop of his head / headdress. Size: 5" L x 2.75" W x 7.8" H (12.7 cm x 7 cm x 19.8 cm)
