Central Asia, Tibet / Nepal, Himalaya Region, ca. mid-20th century CE. A ceremonial mala garland made of cotton with purple silk brocade and painted brass heads and skulls. This was worn by Buddhist dancers / monks during ceremonies honoring Mahakala, the heads representing vanquished demons and Citipati skulls. Size of textile laid flat: 27" L x 8" W (68.6 cm x 20.3 cm); largest head: 3.5" Diameter (8.9 cm)
