Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, mid to late 20th century CE. A striking brass Oracle's crown with five skulls adorned with enamel cabochons to resemble turquoise and coral. The metalwork is intricately tooled and chased, the repousse band has additional relief skulls and intricate lotus and foliate patterning. The five upper skulls, framed by flame or leaf-shaped panels, are removable and attached via rods that fit into sockets welded to the interior of the band. The interior is padded for comfort, and such crowns were traditionally worn by Tibetan Oracles undergoing trances. An elaborate ritual which involves invoking spirits through music, dance, gestures, and sacred words. Each skull symbolizes one of the five Dhyani Buddhas, representing aspects of wisdom and reflecting impermanence and the pursuit of enlightenment. The materials used in this crown suggest a lower level Oracle that may have been preformed in a village or rural monastery. Size: 8" Diameter x 6.5" H (20.3 cm x 16.5 cm)

Oracles in Tibetan Buddhism are revered as spiritual beings that provide guidance and insight into the future. They offer advice to high spiritual leaders, such as the Dalai Lama, and serve as protectors and healers. Oracles enter a corporeal form by possessing human mediums who wear elaborate costumes during rituals. These mediums act as intermediaries between the spirit world and the living, and Oracles have historically played a significant role in guiding Tibet's interests and governmental matters. Notably, the Dalai Lama has a personal oracle known as the Nechung Oracle, who assists in providing protection and wisdom.
