Description:

Pre-Columbian, Bolivia, Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku) culture, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A beautiful textile fragmentary sash comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in vivid hues of crimson, wheat, forest-green, and cobalt. Against the red ground are 11 highly-abstract jaguar masks with diamond-shaped mouths, spiraling eyes, and three-pronged crowns. Ten of the masks meet at their mouths and mirror each other, with the end mask standing alone. The peripheries are reinforced with extra red threads. Mounted against a fabric backing. Size (textile): 34.25" L x 3.875" W (87 cm x 9.8 cm); size (backing): 55" L x 23.75" W (139.7 cm x 60.3 cm).

  • Condition: This is a fragment of a larger textile object. Minor fraying to some interior and peripheral threads, light fading and staining to original coloration, with small area of repair to one side, and light creasing marks. Colors are still visible and vivid.
