Pre-Columbian, Bolivia, Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku), ca. 400 to 1100 CE. A colorful and fun ceramic vessel in the form of a bird with long tail and pointed beak. A flaring, tall neck and unpronounced mouth rises from the center of the bird's back. The surface is decorated with black, red, and creamy white pigment, with a checkered pattern around the neck and abstract motifs that recall fish swimming around the bird's body. Huge black wings decorate the sides and draw the eye with their uniform coloration. Size: 11.55" W x 7.3" H (29.3 cm x 18.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-private collection of an Exxon executive, Ankorage, Alaska, USA, who was gifted this in Peru in the 1970s
