Description:

West Africa, Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Senufo / Mande cultures, Bambara, ca. mid-20th century CE. A collection of three wooden and gourd sistrum rattles, featuring calabash discs with smooth or notched edges. The discs are pierced at the center and threaded onto wooden rods, with cloth or string wrapped around the ends to secure them. The V-shaped wooden frames are carved with abstract forms and linear etchings, and show remains of painted pigments. A sistrum is a rattle that typically consists of a frame or handle with one or more crossbars that hold discs, which produce a percussive sound. These three rattles create a sharp clacking noise. In West African cultures, sistrums are often used in initiation ceremonies for boys and girls, providing rhythmic accompaniment during rituals. Percussive instruments like these are not only functional but also hold artistic and symbolic significance, with the carved elements adding layers of meaning. Size of largest: 19" L x 4" W (48.3 cm x 10.2 cm)
