Native American, Southwest, New Mexico, Tesuque Pueblo people, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. Three hand-built terracotta sculptures of a "Rain Deity" seated- the two remaining arms have the characteristic "mitten" hands. In the late 19th century, the Tesuque Pueblo people began to sculpt small pottery figurines, such as this for sale under the pretense they were rain deities to encourage tourist sales. These "gods" have since evolved into artisanal and imaginative figurines often brightly painted. Size of largest figure: 4.75" L x 4" W x 8" H (12.1 cm x 10.2 cm x 20.3 cm)
