Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumerian to Old Babylonian, ca. late 3rd to mid-2nd millennium BCE. A set of 3 hand-carved stone cylinder seals, 2 carved from hematite and 1 from limestone. The limestone seal is decorated with incised linear motifs while the 2 larger, darker seals exhibit scenes of abstract zoomorphic creatures interacting - for better or worse - with standing human figures. Size of largest: 1.25" L x 0.48" W x 0.46" H (3.2 cm x 1.2 cm x 1.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Davis collection, Houston, Texas, acquired before 2013 from various auction houses in London and New York

  • Condition: Limestone seal has softening to most incised decorations, and darker seals have moderate softening to finer details, otherwise all 3 seals are intact and very good. Nice preservation to most incised decorations on darker seals.
