West coast, Mexico, Ca 300 BCE/CE. Unusual lot of Pre-Columbian ceramics! First, a blackware trough in heavy pottery probably used as a mortar for grinding illicit drugs - 4-5/8" across top. Next, two-tiered olla decorated with added red and gray paint - a very unusual color to find on west coast pottery! Vessel has suspension holes on side and was probably used to hold the illicit drugs created by the blackware trough - 3-5/8" H. Finally, small olla covered in tan slip and red rim and vertical stripes - 3-3/4" D. Provenance: Ex Kincade collection, Utah acquired prior to 1960.
