Description:

Latin America, Guatemala, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A dramatic trio of hand-carved wood demon masks from Guatemala, each painted a vibrant shade of scarlet with abstract imagery: one holding a fish in his teeth, another with a relief mermaid on his brow, and the third showing a nasal bridge in the form of a jaguar. Masks, such as this one, were often made and worn during festivals and parades. The Dance of Conquest masks were likely created during colonial times to celebrate the conquest and conversion of the native peoples, but over time these masks have become seen as a traditional part of Guatemalan history. Size (all similar): 6.9" W x 8.8" H (17.5 cm x 22.4 cm)
