Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Jamacoaque (Jama Coaque) culture, ca. 500 CE. A trio of pottery heads, instantly recognizable to the trained eye as from this artistically unique culture. Two of the heads are normal human faces, albeit with some decoration - jewelry and a headdress. The third is animalistic, maybe a jaguar, and seems to have been made as a mask to wear over another face. The ritual transformation of shamans into animals was a key part of the religious practice of these people, and this seems to be a nice representation of that. Size of each (approximately): 2.25" W x 1.3" H (5.7 cm x 3.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.

  • Condition: All three heads are fragments from larger pieces. Two are clearly broken at the neck; the third looks like it was made as a separate piece to set atop a larger statue. One head is missing part of a nose ring.
