Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, probably Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A trio of West Mexican potteries, including a squat round zoomorphic effigy bottle, head and front paws applied to one end, tail and rear paws applied to the opposite end, with red and white pigment remaining on the surface; a round bowl presenting a polychrome decorative program comprised of geometric motifs in white and orange on a red ground; and last but not least, a spool-shaped, round-bottomed vessel with incised geometric, textile-pattern inspired motifs adorning the exterior walls. Size: round bowl measures 4.75" W x 2.875" H (12.1 cm x 7.3 cm); spool shaped piece 4.25" W x 3.5" H (10.8 cm x 8.9 cm); zoomorphic vessel 3.625" W x 2.75" H (9.2 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.

  • Condition: Repair to one side and chip to rim of spool-shaped vessel. Losses to rim and possible repairs to walls of zoomorphic vessel. Chips to rim and abraded areas on round bowl. All with varying degrees of surface wear and pigment loss.
