Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma or possibly Laos, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A trio of wooden Buddhas - one covered in gilt, each seated atop a tiered throne with his hands in the Bhumisparsa Mudra, the "earth witness", one of the most iconic poses of Buddhism. The left palm is upright in the lap and the right hand reaches down past the robes - here depicted in a lifelike and flowing manner - to touch the earth. This mudra comes from the story of Buddha asking Prthivi, the spirit of the earth, to witness his enlightenment when he was threatened by the king demon, Mara. Size of gilt Buddha: 1.85" W x 6.75" H (4.7 cm x 17.1 cm)
