Description:

Europe / United States, ca. 19th century CE. A collection of whalebone and elephant ivory stake shaped tools known as fids. The thickest is made from elephant ivory, and the slender fid with the bulbous finial and the painted fid is possibly bone or ivory - the density and surface texture suggest ivory. Fids were used by sailors, especially on whaling ships, in to stretch sails, maintain ropes, and work out tight / frozen knots. Size: 5.5" L x 0.8" W (14 cm x 2 cm)

This is an ESA antique exempt piece of ivory and cannot be sold internationally or to anyone residing in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington. We guarantee that the piece was made prior to 1972.
