Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 19th century CE. A fine set of three cast opium weights in the form of stylized zoomorphic creatures standing atop tiered bases. First is a petite brass weight with an abstract lion with a large projection arching over its body. Second is a bronze standing elephant with prominent tusks and a drooping trunk. The largest bronze weight depicts another lion with a vertical tail and a flaming mane. Each weight is covered in fine layers of brown patina. The weights of each weight are (from lightest to heaviest) 22.9 grams, 32.5 grams, and 156.8 grams. Size of largest (lion): 1.3" L x 1.125" W x 2.125" H (3.3 cm x 2.9 cm x 5.4 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection, acquired in 2019 via family descent; ex-private Texas, USA collection, acquired in Asia in the 1990s
