Thomas D. Mangelsen (American, b. 1946). "Canada Geese and Snow" color photograph, 1979. Edition number 163 or 500. Signed with date and number at bottom of photograph. An awe-inspiring photograph by American artist Thomas D. Mangelsen portraying a pair of wild Canadian geese in flight through a snowstorm. Gliding through chilly wind gusts and a steady stream of snow flakes, the majestic birds outstretch their great wings, thick layers of plumage delineated against the blizzardy background as they ready to land. Mangelsen describes this composition stating, "Amidst the fury of a Colorado snowstorm, two majestic Canada geese gracefully descend, their outstretched wings cutting through the swirling snowflakes as they prepare for landing. These resilient migrants, famed for their remarkable journeys spanning thousands of miles, brave the elements with unwavering resolve." Size of photo: 19.25" W x 15.25" H (48.9 cm x 38.7 cm); of frame: 27.625" W x 23.625" H (70.2 cm x 60 cm)
About the artist: "A Nebraska native, Mangelsens love of nature, his life outdoors and business success were heavily influenced by his father. An avid sportsman, Harold Mangelsen took his sons to favorite blinds along the Platte River in Nebraska to observe the great flocks of ducks, geese and cranes that migrate through the valley. From these adventures, Mangelsen learned important lessons for photographing in the field, most notably patience and understanding animal behavior.
Thomas D. Mangelsen is one of the most influential nature photographers in the world. His images, treasured as collectible fine art, are known for their awe-inspiring portrayals of wildlife and natural landscapes. Like Ansel Adams, Eliot Porter and others who came before him, Mangelsen has explored Earths wildest regions, carrying on the photographic tradition of bearing witness.
Guided by a deep conservation ethic, Mangelsen is legendary for his advocacy in seeking protection of rare and imperiled species. 'People sometimes dont understand what the big deal is if we lose one species of salamander or the California gnatcatcher. Whats one bird, or one insect? These animals, even the most seemingly insignificant ones, are a barometer of the planets health and a product of eons of evolution, just as we are. If one disappears, a food source for an entire species may vanish. We are on that chain, we are all linked in nature, interdependent on one another in ways we may not yet be able to imagine.'
Among the critical recognition Mangelsen has received is being named Conservation Photographer of the Year by Natures Best Photography and he appeared on Jane Goodalls 'Among the critical recognition Mangelsen has received is being named Conservation Photographer of the Year by Natures Best Photography and he appeared on Jane Goodall's 'Heroes of the Animal Planet.' He also has been honored numerous times for his conservation work, spoken before large audiences and been featured on radio and television programs." (from the artist's website)
