Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fabulous wooden sculpture of Garuda, the half-man half-bird Hindu deity that serves as both the mount of Vishnu and the national symbol of Thailand. Enveloped in lustrous gold-colored pigment on the front and red on the verso, the mythical being stands with wings spread holding a snake in each hand. His magnificent bird-like visage gazes forward, his beak slightly open as a flaming ushnisha rises from his head. Liberal remains of mirror inlays adorn his wings, just beneath his arms. Size: 3" L x 5.5" W x 10.1" H (7.6 cm x 14 cm x 25.7 cm); 11.7" H (29.7 cm) on included custom stand.
