Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok culture, ca. 15th century CE. A wonderful stoneware jar in the form of an elephant, displaying a spherical body standing upon 4 petite feet. Enveloped in a beautiful, celadon-hued, crackle glaze, the ancient vessel features a narrow neck and an annular, flared rim flanked by a pair of lug handles, each designed to appear as part of a platform on the elephant's back. The head of the adorable animal presents at one side of the jar, exhibiting a long, curled trunk, annular eyes, and extended ears, while its slender tail hangs from the opposite end. Size: 7" in diameter x 7.25" H (17.8 cm x 18.4 cm)

Provenance: ex Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998
