Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok culture, ca. 15th century CE. A wonderful pottery pitcher displaying a tiered form with an apple-form lower section, a globular upper section, a slender neck, and an annular flared rim, all sitting upon a ring-shaped foot. A tubular handle loops upwards from one side of the elegant vessel, while a curved spout rises from the other side. Glazed in hues of forest green and celadon, the exterior of the pitcher is adorned with an intricate decorative program of floral, avian, and geometric motifs, accompanied by horizontal striations. The mouth of an animal is featured at the spout, displaying a pair of bulging eyes and a large open mouth with fierce, tapered fangs that open to seemingly swallow the spout whole. A remarkable example! Size: 5.25" in diameter x 7" H (13.3 cm x 17.8 cm)
