Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok (Si Satchanalai), ca. 15th century CE. A fabulous pottery figure of an elephant and rider enveloped in a lustrous celadon glaze. The hefty beast displays a thick body and large head supported by 4 straight legs as its slender tail loops above its posterior. Flanked by flared ears, its visage displays a pair of almond-shaped eyes, pointed tusks, and a lengthy coiled trunk. A chain-link harness wraps around the animal, as an anthropomorphic figure kneels upon its back. Wearing a loin cloth, the fascinating rider presents slender limbs and an ovoid head with annular eyes, a wide nose, and a straight mouth. Size: 6.75" L x 3.25" W x 6.875" H (17.1 cm x 8.3 cm x 17.5 cm)
