Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok (Si Satchanalai), ca. 15th century CE. A charming hand-built pottery candle holder in the form of a standing elephant, skillfully glazed with black details on a creamy white ground. The endearing animal presents a thick body supported by 4 straight legs with a sinuous tail falling from its posterior. Flanked by a pair of rectangular ears, its adorable visage is tilted skywards and displays almond-shaped eyes, tapered tusks, and a petite mouth held open as though mid-roar, as it curls its lengthy trunk over its head. A flared candle holder rises from the middle of its back. Size: 7" L x 3.125" W x 7" H (17.8 cm x 7.9 cm x 17.8 cm)
