Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Classic Period, ca. 250 to 650 CE. This is a carved white stone effigy mask with a protruding nose, drilled recessed almond-shaped eyes, and thick, fleshy lips. There are attachment holds atop the corners and ear lugs. You are looking at the likeness of a person who once lived in Teotihuacan, because their masks seem to have been their tradition of portraiture. The recessed eyes and mouth may have originally had inlaid shell or stone for eyes and teeth; it was probably also painted when it was originally manufactured. Masks like these do not seem to have been designed to be worn, but instead to be attached to sculptures or placed on mummies. Size: 4.5" W x 5" H (11.4 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: Ex- New York Gallery, Ex acquired from William Arnett in the 1970s.
