Description:

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Teotihuacan culture, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A hand-built pottery incensario fragment of a tall and broad form depicting an adorable turtle. The rectangular fragment bears a slightly rounded form with openwork spaces between the columnar legs of the turtle, and the top is incised and painted with white pigment to resemble the segmented carapace. Poking out from the front is an ovoid turtle head with an amiable countenance composed of encircled eyes, impressed nostrils, and an incised mouth that almost appears to be grinning. Size: 10.75" W x 6.125" H (27.3 cm x 15.6 cm)

  • Condition: This is a fragment of a larger incensario. Nicks and abrasions to base, columns, top, and turtle head, with heavy calcifications and encrustations, softening to some finer details, and fading to original pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
