Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Classic Period, ca. 250 to 650 CE. This is a carved greenish speckled veined stone symetrical and balanced mask with well formed facial features, recessed eyes and arched browline. It has a slightly arched nose with nostrils indicated, ovoid mouth and lug type ears. There are double perforations behind both ears for attachment. Green stones were worth more than gold in Mesoamerica; this mask was likely a prestige object when it was made and continues to be a beautiful piece of art! Provenance: Ex- New York Gallery, Ex Collection of Hilda Tijou, California, acquired 1960's.
