Description:

Ancient Greece, ca. 4th to 2nd century BCE; Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A wonderful gathering of ten terracotta heads from ancient Greece and Rome. Four of the heads are Greek in origin, with three humanistic depictions and a single abstract animal head, perhaps an avian or canine form. The remaining six heads are of Roman design. Three appear to be unidentifiable female heads, two of which display ornate hairstyles and the third with a conical domed head. The last three appear to be important mythological figures, such as the Roman depictions of Isis, Minerva (or Athena in Greek), and Serapis (or Zeus in Greek). A lovely and finely-crafted collection! Size of largest (Roman): 2.25" H (5.7 cm).

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired between 1965 and 1980
