Description:

Ancient Near East, Anatolia (central Turkey) and Northern Syria, Tell Halaf, ca. 5000 to 4000 BCE. The Halaf culture of Anatolia and ancient Syria came about in approximately 5000 BCE and created female figurines with particular fertility attributes that are displayed in this example. Note how the figure sits with legs extended, with both of her arms cradling and supporting her protruding breasts. Overall the figure is quite voluptuous with full, curvy forms. Her visage is relatively minimalist with an abstract rendering of features. The bands of red pigment serve to highlight her curvaceous body and suggest facial features, a necklace, armbands, and body paint. An incredibly old example of visual culture created by the Halaf culture, an organized settlement that scholars believe had developed complex religious and funerary practices. Size: 2.5" L x 1.875" W x 2.75" H (6.4 cm x 4.8 cm x 7 cm)
