Description:

Ancient Near East, Tell Brak, modern day Syria, Middle Uruk Period, ca. 3700 to 3500 BCE. A lovely peach and cream-colored ceramic eye idol. Its exterior is wonderfully covered in scattered pockets of earthen deposits – giving the piece a lovely color gradience. The top register is the prominent part of this piece’s unique silhouette - comprised of two circular holes cut to exacting precision. This buff clay conical abstraction is a dedication to an all-seeing god who watched over the population of early Mesopotamia, with the circular holes at its top representing eyes. Most of these figures were made of stone, with pottery items like this one being much rarer. Size: 4.5" L x 2.5" Diameter x 5.25" H (11.4 cm x 6.4 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private prominent D.K. collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 2000s
