Greek colonies, Calabria, Tarentum, 272 to 235 BCE. AR stater (6.42 g). On obverse, naked boy rider crowning standing horse left., and lifting up foreleg. On reverse, Taras astride dolphin left, holding katharos and distaff, in filed to right, cock. Vlasto 84. Size: 0.8" W (2 cm)

Tarentum, also called Taranto, is famous as the only Spartan colony, founded by the Partheniae, the sons of unmarried Spartan women and non-citizens, whose births were decreed by the Spartans to increase the number of soldiers during the Messenian Wars, but who later lost their citizenship and were forced to search for a new home.
