Tarentum has a long and comprehensive history that dates back to 706 BCE when the Spartans established it as a Greek Colony. The city was located on the south eastern portion of the peninsula on what is commonly referred to as the "heal" of the Italian boot. Today, Taranto as it is known as by the Italians, is a modern city built atop the ancient city that was constructed by the Greeks many centuries ago.
