Description:

Chinese, Tang Dynasty, ca. 700 CE, This figurine of a male tomb attendant of the Tang Dynasty shows a characteristically elongated body form donning a traditional long robe - all adorned with a rich, red/brown glaze. During the Tang dynasty sculptural representations of humans and animals were frequently placed in burial chambers to honor the deceased. The naturalistic modeling of this mold-made figure's facial features is quite striking. The high cheekbones for instance may suggest that this gentleman had Turkish origins as China was quite cosmopolitan during this period. What's more the lustrous glaze enriches the surface. Indeed artists of the Tang period made great innovations in glazework techniques. Overall, a remarkable piece of visual culture and history! 12-3/4"T Provenance: Ex-Splendors of the World All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
