Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A mold-made, hollow votive statue of the goddess Isis. She stands atop a pedestal, with an oval frame around her head and shoulders. Her hands are slightly raised and out to her sides, as if she is reaching to embrace someone or something. Her clothing is detailed, as is her hair, with the characteristic large knot tied in the center of her torso (as she is depicted in an incredible marble statue from the time of Hadrian that can been today at the Musei Capitolini in Rome: inv. MC0744). Size: 3.5" W x 8.5" H (8.9 cm x 21.6 cm)

Isis, an ancient Egyptian goddess, struck a chord with the polytheistic worshippers of the Roman Empire, and her cult spread through the Roman population during the early centuries of the Imperial Period. For example, there is a gorgeous wall painting preserved at Pompeii of her greeting the Greek heroine Io.
