Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. An elegant red-slip pottery flagon with a slight concave base, a large piriform body, tapered cylindrical neck, a wide mouth, collared rim, and twin applied strap handles. A pair of patterned horizontal bands adorn the midsection of the body and provide a detailed complementarity to the wheel-thrown striations. Primarily used to hold wine or other consumable liquids, flagons were invented to provide hydration to field laborers or rowers aboard ships. Size: 12.875" H (32.7 cm).
