Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fabulous hand-blown glass unguentarium, blue-green in color and opaque in appearance, with a slight concave base and smooth pontil scar. The piriform body tapers gently upwards toward a slightly constricted neck line, and the tubular neck is capped with a folded rim. The exterior is covered in layers of brilliant silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence, though these pale in comparison to the opulent areas of golden iridescence scattered across the surface. Ladies traditionally used unguentariums as containers for scented oils, perfumes, or cosmetic powder. They were an essential component of bathhouse necessities, so examples like this would have been a common yet beautiful sight among the Roman populace. Size: 3.375" W x 7.25" H (8.6 cm x 18.4 cm).
