Description:

Roman Empire, ca. 2nd to 4th centuries CE. This is my favorite piece of Roman glass that I have ever seen (and I have seen a lot)! A long, narrow neck topped by a flat, wide rim flares outwards at its base to meet a fat bell-shaped bowl with a slightly indented base. The dirt encrustation - particularly on the interior - creates an archaeological surface that is very beautiful. The piece has surprising heft (probably because of the pale dirt packed inside of it) and was made to hold perfumes, unguents, or any precious liquid that could evaporate easily. Size: 3.2" W x 7.9" H (8.1 cm x 20.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-California Museum of Ancient Art, Santa Monica, CA
