Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A tall example of a flask that is free blown from nearly transparent glass in soft turquoise hues. The vessel exhibits a hemispherical, bell-shaped body with a concave base and rough pontil scar, a tubular neck that tapers gradually upwards, and a flared, in-folded rim. Flasks like this example were used to hold copious volumes of scented oils or other liquids for a woman's toilette, and this one is covered in delicate layers of rainbow-hued iridescence. Size: 2.8" W x 5.5" H (7.1 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Virginia, USA collection, before 2000

#170158

  • Condition: One small but stable pressure fissure within glass matrix along base, with light weathering film and encrustations, and micro-bubbling within glass matrix, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Nice earthen deposits within vessel body and soft rainbow iridescence throughout.
