Description:

From ancient Ecuador, circa 300 BCE - 800 CE. This example measures on the large side of the spectrum for these types of figures at approximately 11-1/4" tall x ~6-1/2" wide. This finely rendered figure depicts a standing female wearing a head covering, large nose decoration, ear ornamentation, and long skirt or dress-like garment. The intricate embossed designs covering the front of her arms exhibit a known but rare type of detailing for such figures, and may depict decorative scarring or tattooing, or perhaps is representative of embroidered, woven material. The "D" shaped eyes are indicative of the Chone type of Jamacoaque figure. For comparable examples of this type, see pg. 176 of "Seeing with New Eyes" by Rebecca Stone, and also pg. 149 of "The Secret Art of Ecuador" by Klein and Cevallos. Provenance: Former Poolos, private Chicago, USA collection, collected between 1950 and 1965. Authenticity Guaranteed and a Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this lot The starting price is the lowest price at which the lot can sell.

  • Condition: Repaired clean, fine ancient breaks at the neck, both arms and the figure's right foot. No restoration over the fine breaklines, which have little to no loss in the lines and are hardly visible except under close examination. Heavy Manganese and other dark mineral deposits remain overall, with excellent root marks as evidence of age and authenticity.
