Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica / Panama, Chiriqui, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. An impressive and large hand-built pottery tripodal vessel that may have functioned as a chocolate pot, with an incised pattern around the neck. Similar types of vessels will often incorporate a zoomorphic form into the supporting legs - here the projecting knobbed top is reminiscent of joints on an ungulate, such as a deer - however - their unusual form has led others to call these "spider leg" vessels. "Chocolate pot" and "cocoa cup" are slightly more pleasant names for this tripodal form that could have been used and/or symbolized the traditional drink! Size: 9.5" Diameter x 13.5" H (24.1 cm x 34.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
