Description:

Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A beautiful blackware pouring vessel known as an epichysis. The vessel possesses a characteristically spool-shaped base with a curved, ribbed lower body leading to a tubular neck and a slender pinched spout joined to the shoulder by a high, raised handle, with applied matching lion heads adorning the areas where the upper handle end meets the spout. A maker's mark in the form of a red "X" adorns the base. Size: 4.5" in diameter x 7.625" H (11.4 cm x 19.4 cm)
