Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Ixtlan del Rio, ca 300 BCE to 300 CE. A sizable standing female shaman in an intense moment of a spiritual ritual with a trance-like expression of gritted teeth and widened eyes. Though bare-chested, she is otherwise elaborately adorned - as indicative of her heightened social status - with a steppe-motif skirt, prominent armbands, ornate earrings, a lengthy septum piercing, a striped headband, and face paint. She holds a cup in one hand, likely filled with a psychedelic substance for ceremonial intoxication, while her other hand gestures towards her, as though inviting the viewer to join. Size: 10.1" W x 18.4" H (25.7 cm x 46.7 cm)

Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection; ex-Vallejo, California, USA estate sale; ex-Alberto Martinez collection, before 2000
