Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya territories, late Preclassic, ca. 400 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-carved volcanic stone post depicting a stylized human squatting upon his folded legs with arms crossed over his chest in high relief, perhaps a guardian figure. The simple facial features - a long nose and small but deep eyes that may have had inlays - give the figure a haunting appearance. This stone sculpture could have served as an informal funerary statue or was perhaps meant to guard the entrance to a sacred site used to communicate with or traverse to the underworld. Size: 17" L x 5.5" W (43.2 cm x 14 cm); 18.5" H (47 cm) on included custom stand.
