Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Maya Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fascinating mottled grey "eccentric" flint of elongated form, its sides knapped to such thin, sharp edges that they appear almost translucent under bright light. The fanciful shape shows the God K, K'awill, in profile. This Maya deity is associated with lightning, serpents, maize, and fertility. His long snout and serpent fangs are both visible here. Stones carved not as weapons, but as interesting designs, had sacrificial and ceremonial use for the Maya, and are often found as offerings in caches inside of stone monuments and other architectural features. They are most common in the eastern part of the Maya world, often in the Peten department of Guatemala. They were made by specialists in workshops. Size: 2.3" W x 7.9" H (5.8 cm x 20.1 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.
